Endocrine System

Endocrine system comprises a group of endocrine glands. A gland is a group of cells that secrete something. If this secretion comes in a tube or a duct, then the gland is known as exocrine gland. For e.g. tear glands secrete tears into our eyes, sweat glands secrete sweat on to our skin, sebaceous glands secrete sebum on to our skin. Endocrine glands pour their secretions directly into the blood, thus these are also known as ductless glands. For e.g. thyroid gland, pituitary gland, parathyroid gland etc.

Endocrine glands secrete hormones. Hormones are the chemical messengers that are directly poured into the blood. The production site and the target site of each hormone are different. Example of hormones is thyroxine, parathormone, adrenaline, nor adrenaline etc.

TYPES OF ENDOCRINE GLANDS

Endocrine glands are categorized as:

  1. Purely Endocrine glands: These endocrine glands are purely endocrine in nature, no exocrine part is isolated with them, and thus they are known as purely endocrine glands. For e.g. hypothalamus, thyroid gland, pituitary gland, thymus gland, adrenal gland, pineal gland etc.
  2. Partly Endocrine glands: These endocrine glands have exocrine part associated with them, thus they are heterocrine in nature and are also known as partly endocrine glands. For e.g. pancreas, gonads, kidneys, placenta etc.
